The first real trip

Since we've build our new "camper", we have gone on a few short test trips in California, but have not tested the rig on any longer trips.

So, we made the fundamental mistake of taking a newly build rig into a long trip without knowing its strengths and weaknesses yet. But, so far, it mostly has turned out as expected. The parts we really thought about have worked well, the parts we didn't have time for or underestimated in their importance have been challenging. All this is as expected and we have to make allowances for it.

That aside, the start of the trip has been a quick and boring drive north on I-5, then all the way deep into British Columbia, where, at least for me, the actual trip started.

View from a fire lookout in British Columbia – the haze is wildfire smoke

These days, most of the fire watch is done by satellite or from planes, so these lookout towers aren't manned anymore, but they are great destinations since they always are in places with great views of the surrounding landscape.

Unfortunately, we could only see a few kilometers, due to wildfire smoke in the air.

Keeping a lookout on the fire lookout

While parked at the lookout location, we enjoyed the comforts of our electric cooking system and made some tea for the ongoing drive.

Coming through Quesnel, BC, we took some photos of local art.

A theme Quesnel has, is to paint their fire hydrants:

The beginning ...

After having experimented with a roof top tent and an adventure trailer, we have now settled on a compact truck with a small camper shell on the rear.

To this:

This is a great setup for short (a few days) to medium (a few weeks, up to a month or two) trips, although it is very, very small for two people given that we have a split between the truck and the camper cabin which are not connected, meaning it's two small spaces, instead of one just ever so slightly larger one.

The build has been done over about one calender year and I'm in the process of adding our build log here.

In the future, posts here will be more about travels than about the vehicle, everything related to the Jeep will be on the Jeep Gladiator page, with maybe some mentions here.
