Jeep Gladiator

Our current travel vehicle is a 2023 Jeep Gladiator, which replaced our Toyota 4Runner. We switched to the truck so we could add an AluCab Canopy Camper to the back.

The current state looks like this:

Summary

  • 2023 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon EcoDiesel
  • AluCab Canopy Camper with
    • AluCab Shadow Awning
    • AluCab Shower Cube
  • TrailRax roof rack, just the front part
  • TeraFlex HD suspension with Falcon adjustable shocks, giving about a 3" lift
  • Complete DIY rear seat delete and camper interior
    • Pages for the actual build are coming up in the near future – need to write them first ... ;-)

At this point we are testing the build and using it in travel conditions.

Early testing near Trona Pinnacles:

Goals

From what we've learned on trips with setups we had before, we had a few goals that this build needed to satisfy:

  • One Minute Sleep Ready: After arriving at camp having a bed ready to jump in must be achievable in under a minute (preferably way under a minute, but of course plus any work the actual site needs for either clearing stuff or leveling the truck). Same for packing away the basics.
  • 30 second awning: Setting up an awning should be quick and simple, basically "instant", so that we'd use it more.
  • Ability to be out of the elements when the weather is not great for being outside. For this truck we don't need a full living space inside, this isn't our house or home, but it's great to be able to avoid rain, mosquitos, etc. if needed.
  • Fewer tires to air down and fill up. So, no trailer.
  • Off-road capabilities at least as good as our 4Runner which had a 2" lift, decent tires, and excellent suspension.

Overall, we have achieved these goals, although I have to admit, more interior space would be greatly appreciated.  Especially during challening weather the "split living space" between truck cabin and camper cabin is not great in these conditions.

Build Log

We have documented our build mostly on the Jeep Gladiator Forum, but I'm putting the important write-ups here as well.

Check the build page (coming soon).

Reviews

In our build we have some products that are readily available on the market and we've written some reviews for them as well.

Check the reviews page for these.
